The John Coltrane Jazz & Blues Festival Live Stream

2020 may have shuttered in-person festivals but we had the pleaser of hosting a Live Streaming Concert for the The John Coltrane Jazz & Blues Festival featuring the Lao Tizer Band. The Coltrane Jazz & Blues festival does an amazing job of showcasing amazing artists and supporting young and upcoming artists. If you can please donate to The Coltrane Jazz & Blues Festival to help them keep supplying new instruments to deserving young students.

Piano Bar Live Stream Concert Series

We are back with a new, Piano Bar, Live Stream Concert Series at Ultimate Studios, Inc.! We are excited for this intimate show featuring an amazing artist, beautiful acoustic piano and fantastic music!

Our first artist is the uber talented Gabby Gordon! She will be performing 2 sets. Set one at 12pm and set two at 7pm.

Gabby Gordon is a danish/american soulful singer-songwriter. In her early years she was born and raised in a tiny town called â€œUgelbÃ¸lleâ€ in Denmark. But since she was 8 years old she has lived in six different countries, and spent the last 15 years in the USA. where she came to study music and follow her dreams of being an artist.

Gabby regularly performs at live music venues and clubs in West Hollywood, writes and releases her own music and works as a studio/ session singer for many types of projects.

Her unique background and many different impressions of life influenced both her musical development and personality. Gabby sings her stories from her heart and soul, and travels all around her creative and emotional spectrum. Her voice is powerful and dynamic, often compared to Adele, Amy Winehouse, or Norah Jones.

Her lyrics are personal with a touch of â€˜quirkyâ€™ and Gabby is know for drawing her audience in with charming life stories – filing the room with her melodic musicality and life loving big personality.

In recent years she has played hundreds of intimate concerts in Denmark, Germany, England, Holland, Sweden, Switzerland and Israel with her soulful pop trio â€œEbb & Flowâ€.

Having just completed her very first solo tour around Denmark in the summer of 2020, Gabby is back in Los Angeles getting ready to record new music for her upcoming album.

New Live Stream Concert Series

Live Stream Concert

Live music is such an integral part of our everyday lives and although 2020 has stripped us of that. Well the crew at Ultimate Studios, Inc is trying to do our part to bring you amazing sounding music from some amazing independent artists.

With most clubs and venues being shut down right now independent artists have largely lost their ability to play their music live in front of an audience. While simple live streaming from phones and simple homes setups is great we are trying to bring recording quality live concerts straight to our home.

Ultimate Studios, Inc has a full HD live streaming rig with a 5 camera switch. The live room is well equipped with instruments (and plenty of space for social distancing!!!) and the audio rolls right off the Trident 88 console and intro the live stream. The audience at home basically you will hear the same thing that we hear in the control room.

We are offering this as a service to any artists that would like to put on a fantastic sounding and looking concert for their fans.

To kick this amazing live streaming service off we are launching a Live Streaming Concert Series. We will feature a diverse group of independent artists that we think are really great!

Our first artist is The Lao Tizer Band. Lao is an amazing and accomplished pianist and his band consists of some of the best players in the business; Ric Fierabracci (bass), Gene Coye (drums), Eric Marienthal (sax) and Tita Hutchison (vocals).

Tracking the Band Live w/Argus Roh

Tracking musicians together, live, in the studio is absolutely one of my favorite things in the world. The energy between players is contagious and it’s so rewarding to hear the music come out of the speakers with a finished quality to it (well almost finished anyway!).

We decided to record Argus Roh‘s debut EP live. Except for the vocals we tracked drums, bass and guitars all together and it really came out well.

I have the studio setup so drums can be in the main room, utilizing all the available space, and guitars can be in 2 separate ISO booths.

This allows the band to play together but still have complete separation between the instruments.

Because of this we were still able to do punches for any instrument if needed (we only did this once actually!).

The band featuring Sam Escobar (vocals), Alexis Argueta (drums), Rob Duarte (guitar, Jason Campos (bass) and Tony Atilano (guitar) did a fantastic job.

Most metal music nowadays is recorded in pieces so the band playing together added another level of excitement.

Recording Drums with Bloodfeast Ritual

Some sessions are brutal and then some sessions are BRUTAL!

Metal maniacs Bloodfeast ritual entered the studio to start recording their debut EP. Initially we did 6 days of tracking. 4 for drums and 2 for guitars and bass (they were loooong days!).

The drum sessions were really fun. Tom Tierney brought in his monstrous Tama Birch Babinga kit which is a gorgeous kit. We put all new Evans heads on everything before the initial tracking and tuned everything just right.

Our goal was to capture the actual drum sound for the EP live and not rely on samples to define the sound. To do that we spent a decent amount of time tuning and dialing in the tones.

With a kit this size it can be challenging to capture everything evenly so we spent a lot of time going around the kit to make sure everything was represented.

Once that was done it was all about getting Tom a good headphone mix and hitting the record button.

I’ll leave the rest of the details to the video but suffice it to say we had a TON of fun.

Wiring A Recording Studio: Connecting the Console to the Computer

I get a lot of questions about how I get sound from the console to the computer. And while every console/mixer is a bit different it’s really a pretty simple setup that I’ll explain in this video (with some cool animations too!)

I will also answer a common question I get from some of you about using budget mixers not necessarily meant for recording. Some don’t have the necessary outputs to do a full multi-tracked session so what can you do? We’ll discuss that in this video too!

Studio wiring doesn’t have to be super complicated at first. As you start adding more outboard gear it can get messy but with a basic understanding of what you’re doing and a little planning it’s possible to get a smooth setup that makes all of your sessions run smooth.

Mixing Tips! Parallel Compression on Drums

Quick drum mixing tip!!

While minimal miking setups on drums can be very, very effective they can sometimes lack focus or excitement that is needed for modern music production. I want to show you a great way to add some thickness and attitude to any minimally miked drum set. How? With Parallel Compression!!

Parallel compression is a staple for most mixing engineers. Why? Because it’s so effective in helping make certain elements of a mix stand out or feel bigger. I use Parallel compression ALL the time on multiple areas in my mixes.

For this tutorial I’m going to use stock Logic Pro X plugins only. I want this to be about the concept and not the gear. Once you understand the concept use the gear you have. Analog or Digital. Go to town and have fun!

Gears of War 5 Portuguese Voice Over

Gears of War 5 is a huge video game, both in popularity and amount of Voice Over! I had the pleasure of recording Voice Over artist Bruno Mello who portrayed the character Del.

There is an enormous amount of dialog in a game like this. Some of it’s freeform, some is strict time constraint and some is lip sync.

The lip sync is the most fun because you get to see how it matches up with the video but is also tricky because Portuguese and English don’t necessarily match syllable for syllable!

The studio, Audioman, that was contracted with overseeing the Portuguese overdubs is located in Sao Paolo. It’s run by a school mate, Nick Casabona, from my Musicians Institute days in the late 90’s. Pretty cool!

It was fun working on such a cool game with great talent. If you’re a gamer you’ve got to check it out!

Mixing for Taiwanese Artist “Mixer”

Last year I had the wonderful pleasure of going to Taiwan and putting on several recording clinics with studios in Taipei and Kaohsiung along with my partners in crime Hao and Tao. Well they have opened up Ultimate Studios, Inc Taiwan and this year I got to mix a project they produced at their brand new studio.

The grammy winning band Mixer worked a new tracked at Ultimate Studios, Inc TW and was Mixed and Mastered here at Ultimate Studios, Inc in Los Angeles by myself and Ernesto Homeyer. They shot a new music video as well and a full behind the scenes video of the entire recording process along with Warm Audio.

It was so much fun having the chance to work on this track with them and the new studio. It’s a really cool band (even if you don’t speak Mandarin the melody is catchy!!) and I wish them all the best!
